Sunny Deol Strong, Gadar 2 Weak: Movie Review

Gadar-2-Movie-Review

Story:

After saving his wife Sakeena (Ameesha Patel) from Pakistan many years ago, Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), a army-truck driver, needs to cross the border again to rescue his son from a Pakistani General Hamid Iqbal’s (Manish Wadhwa) anger. The General is upset about something Tara did in 1947.

Review:

A sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha arrives 22 years later, aiming to bring back the patriotism and family love during wartime. It also promotes the idea that India belongs to people of all faiths. However, the movie lacks a strong foundation. The first film’s emotions connected with the audience due to the impact of the partition’s aftermath. The love story and survival tale in the sequel struggle to evoke the same feelings. Gadar 2 relies on nostalgia, dramatic dialogues, and slow-motion action scenes, without a coherent story.

Tara’s enemy is now Hamid Iqbal, a Pakistani General who punishes those who prefer the Bhagavad Gita over the Quran. With the 1971 war looming due to India’s involvement in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Iqbal seeks revenge. He captures Tara’s son, leading Tara to repeat his past actions to save his child. The son’s love story in Pakistan feels unnecessary. The sequel feels overly long with a wandering plot.

The film’s music and Sunny Deol stand out. The song ‘Udd jaa Kaale Kaava’ by Udit Narayan captures emotions and nostalgia better than the whole film. Sunny Deol’s performance is powerful, particularly his heartfelt concern for his son’s future. Ameesha Patel’s role lacks substance, while Utkarsh Sharma doesn’t fully fit the action drama.

Gadar 2 isn’t poorly made, but its characters lack depth, making it hard to evoke the intended emotions or hold attention. For Sunny Deol’s fans, his charisma and iconic moments remain highlights.”
